What am I becoming as a PE teacher? The Challenges and Inspirations of PE in Ireland today. Pedagogical Change. Why would you continue to do something you do not enjoy? This is a question which I feel has shaped the PE teacher I am becoming. If students do not enjoy something they will not want to do it. As Tannehill et al (2015) outline, if we want to make physical activity truly apart of every day for young people then we must make it enjoyable. However, can students truly enjoy something if they do not understand it fully or if they do not have the skills to do it independently? This is something I have come to realise as I progress through my teacher education. It is my belief that it is no longer enough to just have enjoyable PE. Students require more. While ultimately I feel my goal as a teacher is student enjoyment, I now feel that in order for students to achieve enjoyment they must also have an understanding of what it is they are doing, why they are doing it, how it...

Physical Education vs Instagram

Physical education vs Instagram   Educating young people to understand body imag e   Your experience on the topic on school placement While on school placement I found that due to outside influences and pressures, many students are conscious of their body image. I found this with the second year students in particular. I mainly noticed this while doing a HRA unit of learning with the students. The students seemed motivated to do HRA as there was a lot of circuit training involved and both boys and girls remarked how the circuit training would help them ‘get better bodies’. While this was a positive thing as students were participating well in the lesson due to the extrinsic motivation, I do feel that there is too much pressure on young people to have a ‘perfect’ body image due to outside influences on social media, especially Instagram. I often overheard students discussing Instagram posts and social media while in PE and comparing themselves to ...

Balancing the Imbalance - boys and girls participation in physical activity

PY4055 Blog 2 – Susan O’Donoghue 16167392 Physical Education and its potential to address the imbalance between boys’ and girls’ levels of participation in physical activity       Your experience on the topic on school placement From my experience on school placement, I feel that physical education, with the right attitudes, does have the ability to address the imbalance between boys’ and girls’ levels of participation in Physical Activity. In my experience, while there was an issue with participation, it was across both genders, and this in my opinion, was due to the attitude my cooperating teacher had towards participation. He was quite happy to allow students to sit out or ‘go to the gym’ (which meant sitting at the top of the stairs chatting), so naturally students- both boys and girls took advantage of this. However, when I began placement I acted as if I didn’t know this happened, and when students tried not to participate I gave them jobs such as score ke...

PY4055 Blog – Susan O’Donoghue 16167392 Quality Physical Education (#CoolPE) and the use of digital technology to provide an inclusive learning environment Your experience on the topic on school placement       Unfortunately, the school I completed my placement in was not very advanced with regards to digital technology. While there was projectors and white boards in all of the classrooms, none of the students had access to laptops or iPad's and there was only one computer room in the school. In the PE hall there was no technology at all, not even a sound system to use during dance, so I made do with a portable speaker. However, because I have never experienced using technology in a classroom I cannot say that not having it hindered me, although when I begin to imagine the ways in which technology could have enhanced an inclusive environment in my PE lessons, the opportunities seem endless! If I had access to digital technology I could have used it as a way o...
